Ibtihaj Muhammad is an American sabre fencer and Olympic hopeful from Maplewood, N.J.
Muhammad began fencing sabre at the age of 17. She quickly developed in the weapon, receiving a scholarship from the prestigious Duke University where she was a 3-time All American and Junior Olympic Champion. After graduating from Duke with an International Relations and African Studies double major, Muhammad decided to pursue fencing full time.
Currently a member of the US World Championship Team, Muhammad’s career highlights include 2-time USA National Champion, 2-time Pan American Team Champion, 2010 Pan American Bronze Medalist, and 6th place at the 2011 Grade A World Cup in Belgium.
Muhammad fences for the Peter Westbrook Foundation (PWF) in New York City with coach Akhi Spencer-El. Muhammad is currently ranked 2nd in the United States, 11th in the world, and is aiming for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
