EyeHear 20/20: Tips For Improving Your Hearing Abilities

May 14, 2013

Improve your hearing during May’s Better Hearing And Speech Month

For anyone who experiences hearing loss, you know just how difficult and disadvantaging this problem can be. When you are watching television with your family at night, you are always straining to hear conversations and commercials while the volume seems loud to others around you. When people begin talking to you in crowded areas, you nod along to sentences and questions that you just don’t seem to catch.

When you suffer from hearing loss and find yourself very familiar with the scenarios mentioned above, it is easy to feel frustrated and discouraged in day-to-day situations. However, what many people do not know is there are actually several steps that you can take to help improve your hearing abilities both permanently and on a day-to-day basis.

To help celebrate May’s Better Hearing and Speech Month, we here at EyeHear 20/20 are taking this opportunity to share these tips on how to improve your hearing abilities once and for all, and, in turn, improve your life:

Be Proactive About Damaging Noises

Being subjected to very loud, irritating, shrill noises on a regular basis can be very damaging to your eardrums. For instance, hearing gunfire at the shooting range or heading to a loud rock concert without ear plugs. If you already have difficulty hearing, these loud noises can be even more detrimental to your eardrums, so try and avoid them whenever you can. This also goes for noises that may not seem like they would be loud, but are very close to your eardrums, like headphones.

Have Regular Check-ups With An ENT

Visiting an ENT (ear, nose and throat) doctor regularly, alongside your list of other bi-annual checkups, will help you stay on top of any problems that may spring up. Catching hearing problems early can be very beneficial and an ENT doctor may be able to offer you medications and treatments that may stop hearing problems before they get worse.

Check For A Build Up Of Earwax

If you do not usually experience significant vision loss, but one day wake up to find that your hearing is slightly worse than usual, you may simply have a buildup of earwax. Some hearing loss can be caused by having excess wax in your ear canal. Therefore, have a friend or family member look into your hear with a flashlight to see if they can see anything. However, if you do see buildup, do NOT touch it. Trying to dig it out will only make it worse. Trying washing out the blockage or, if it is severe, call your doctor to make an appointment to have it flushed out.

Look Into Hearing Aids

Unfortunately, if your hearing loss is caused by a structural damage due to aging, injury or disease, you most likely will not be able to reclaim your hearing naturally. In this instance, there are several technologies that can help to restore your hearing, such as hearing aids. These helpful hearing devices have come a long way since their initial conception and are hardly noticeable in people who wear them on a day-to-day basis.
