New Raindrop Inlay

October 18, 2016

OCLI is happy to announce that we are one of two practices in Northern New Jersey chosen to initially offer the Raindrop inlay, a new and revolutionary treatment for presbyopia, also known as age related farsightedness.

As our bodies age, we go through lot of changes. Our eyes are no exception to that, and everyone will experience some degree of presbyopia in their later years. It’s estimated that over one billion people worldwide have some degree of presbyopia, meaning that there’s a good chance that it will affect you in your 40’s and 50’s, and certainly later on in life. Living with presbyopia can be a daily hassle, and some people simply don’t know that they have options to deal with it other than reading glasses.

So what makes the Raindrop inlay special, and why are we so excited about it? The Raindrop inlay is really a marvel of modern science. It’s actually made up of about 80 percent water, and it’s the size of a pinhead and thinner than a human hair. The Raindrop is the first inlay ever created that actually works to gently change the shape of the cornea. During the procedure, the surgeon will place the inlay just beneath the surface of the eye. This tiny lens is made of a biocompatible material with similar water content and properties as the cornea.

The procedure is incredibly quick and totally painless. Although you might assume that you need the procedure in both eyes, raindrop is only implanted in your non-dominant eye. Patients will need to be driven home from the procedure, and should take it easy the rest of the day, but most will be able to return to normal activities the day after the procedure. And that, quite frankly, is amazing. This 10-minute outpatient procedure will give patients freedom from the constant “on and off” that reading glasses require. No more bifocals, no more stretching the paper as far from you as possible. Most patients see an improvement in their vision within one week, and then see continued improvement in the following weeks.

In fact, in an FDA clinical study, patients gained an average of 5 lines on a near vision chart within the first week of receiving the Raindrop inlay. And their vision continued to improve after the first week.

And as we mentioned before, the inlay is incredibly small and transparent, so it’s practically unnoticeable in your eye. And while the inlay may not completely eliminate your need for reading glasses, it will certainly improve your near vision and cut down on the hassle of taking your glasses with you everywhere you go.

We are currently recruiting patients for our first surgery day in December, and the five patients we select will get their Raindrop inlay for half the normal price. Needless to say, this is a fantastic deal, so if you’d like more information about the inlay and the procedure, or have any other questions, then don’t hesitate to contact us and schedule a consultation.
