The Facts About Pink Eye

March 10, 2009

Lately, a number of friends and acquaintances, as well as their children, have been exposed to or have been diagnosed with conjunctivitis, also known as “pink eye”.

Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, or the outermost layer of the eye and the inner eyelids. Conjunctivitis can occur in adults, as well as young children. A pink eye, along with irritation, itching, burning, pain, stinging, crusting or light sensitivity are all common symptoms of conjunctivitis. The viral and bacterial forms of "pink eye" are contagious and care should be taken to avoid spreading the infection. Here are some tips on how to prevent a “pink eye”outbreak, provided by allaboutvision.com:

Wash hands frequently, and encourage children to do the same. Soap should always be available.

Never allow personal items, including hand towels to be shared at home or in school.

Discourage eye rubbing or touching to avoid the spread of bacteria and viruses. Use antiseptic solutions constantly to wipe household countertops, toys, work spaces, doorknobs and faucet handles.

If you wear contact lenses, do not wear your lenses until your condition has been resolved. Replace contaminated lenses and solutions immediately before resuming use. Always follow cleaning and care instructions to avoid further contamination.

You should see an eye doctor if you suspect you may have conjunctivitis. It is a common and easily treatable condition, which generally has no lasting effects and is not sight-threatening.
