Healthy Vision: The Care And Keeping Of Your Eyes

March 20, 2012

Follow these simple steps to ensure that you’re keeping your eyes safe.

When it comes to our day-to-day tasks and functions, it is no secret that we place a great deal of importance on our eyes and our vision in nearly every aspect of our lives. From simple household chores such as cleaning the house or planting in the garden, to essential parts of your job like checking your email and reading over work reports, our eyes are the windows through which we view the world around us.

In fact, many surveys have shown that, of the five senses―sight, smell, touch, taste and hear―the majority of people said that sight is the one sense that they fear losing the most. So, given the important role that our eyes play in our daily lives and activities, wouldn’t it only make sense that we care for them and protect them as best as possible? Unfortunately, not all people do.

Some people believe that caring for their vision begins and ends with eyeglasses, contact lenses or beneficial vision surgeries such as LASIK. And, while these helpful vision devices can do wonders for clear vision and functioning eyesight, there are many are things that you can do to maximize and protect the visual tools that you currently have. Even if you are lucky enough to have perfect 20/20 vision, taking care of your eyes and protecting them against injury is the key to keeping your eyes perfect.

To help you get a better idea of how you can prevent serious eye injuries, as well as protect your eyes against dangers in the future, we have put together these basic eye care tips that will ensure that your eyes stay healthy and strong:

Protect Your Vision

The single most important thing that you can do to protect your eyes for the future is to make sure that they do not get injured in the first place. Whether you have a dangerous, injury-prone job, you are a regular sports-enthusiast or your dangers do not go past those simple accidents that occur within the home, it’s important to properly prepare for the safety dangers of your work before you head in. For instance, bring proper eye protection, eliminate any and all hazards before starting the job, and always be aware of those working around you.

Make Regular Eye Examinations

Most annual vision screenings that adults undergo only check to determine how well a person can see at a distance. Vision exams, however, are much more through. A comprehensive eye exam includes tests to determine nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, eye coordination and eye muscle function, eye focusing abilities and an overall eye health exam-which in most cases involves dilation and glaucoma testing. Eye exams are also especially important in diagnosing diseases and disorders in young children.

Prevent Further Problems

There are many habits in our daily life that could be seriously injuring to our eyes if not prevented. For instance, if you are a daily contact wearer, it is important that you keep your contact case clean and rise it out with proper solution after every contact insertion. You should also leave your case open to air dry to prevent bacteria from growing. Also, if you are a regular makeup wearer, it is important to closely follow the expiration date that is set by the manufacturer. Many beauty products are a breeding ground for bacteria that you then put on your eyes day after day.

The health and strength of your eyesight is no joking matter. Be sure to follow these three simple safety tips to ensure that you avoid dangerous injuries to your eyes, as well as practice proper eye care maintenance each and every day.
