Take a Vitamin—To Improve Discomfort from Dry Eyes

April 29, 2015

Chronic dry eyes affect a good amount of the population. Here’s what happens: each time you blink there are tears that lubricate your eyes. The excess tears go into drainage ducts in the corners of the eyes near the nose, and drain back into the nose. But there are many factors, such as age, gender, medication, medical conditions or even things like wearing contacts for a prolonged period of time or having had eye surgery. And we all know the big offender: allergies.

For patients with chronic dry eyes, a simple pill for relief may seem too good to be true. Especially this time of year when allergies are more likely to flare up, having dry eyes isn’t a risk you want to take, because the discomfort they create can ruin a variety of situations.

But scientists are saying it could be as easy as omega-3 fatty acid supplements.

What’s the deal?

In a recent study, scientists across the country tested over patients with dry eye disease in a double-blind placebo study. Over one hundred of the patients received either DHA and EPA (omega fatty acids) for three months or similar-looking placebos. The patients were tested at the beginning of the trial, then at six and twelve weeks afterwards.

Why these acids?

The 3 acids, Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha linolenic acid (ALA), are not normally made in the body and so in order for a person to get the correct amount, they need to be supplemented into one’s diet. Because of time restrictions, taste preference, and other factors, it can be difficult to get enough of these acids. Hence why they are being supplied in pill form.

What happened?

All of the patients receiving the supplements improved remarkably in tear production and quality compared to the patients who took the placebos. Doctors concluded that oral supplements of omega-3 fatty acids (1680 mg EPA and 560 mg DHA) daily for 12 weeks effectively treats dry eye disease by improving tear production and quality.

Doctor Silverman recommends PRN Dry Eye Omega Benefits for exactly that reason. It’s a supplement that he highly advises his patients in New Jersey to invest in.

What is PRN?

PRN is a vitamin company that Dr. Silverman highly trusts. While you can take vitamins and get what things via food that benefit your eyes, PRN provides supplements that are directly helpful for your eyes. The doctors and scientists behind PRN are consistently trained on the newest omega-3 news and best practices and are able to implement these into the science behind their supplements.

What else is different about PRN?

What’s most different is the chemical makeup of the product. Most Omega 3 products start out in their Triglyceride form and at their final stage, are in an ethyl-ester based form. PRN however, removes the ethyl alcohol and so the final product is in a re-esterified triglyceride form.

Additionally, PRN products are peer reviewed and the formulas are approved by a medical advisory panel.

How much do I need?

With the dry eye supplement, you just need four soft gels daily with a meal to receive the omega-3 benefits. In addition, these omega-3 fatty acids promote cardiovascular health, as well. PRN Dry Eye Omega supplements are tested for purity and are safer to use than most over-the-counter supplements.

Remember, as we have mentioned before, there are other steps you can take to improve your eye health, too. Along with Omega-3s, you may consider taking Vitamin C or A which have a positive impact on your likelihood to develop cataracts and with macular degeneration.
