Turn Your Brown Eyes Blue? Clinical Trials Underway for Laser Eye Color Change

April 30, 2015

Dr. Gregg Homer of Stroma Medical has announced clinical trials are underway for a new laser procedure to permanently change eye colors for a new laser procedure for permanent eye color change.

The procedure is completely non-invasive, which means the patient will not feel any pain or discomfort during the 30 second treatment. In fact, only a small tool is used to hold the eyelid open for the procedure, and nothing else even touches the patient.

The eye color change surgery is completely non-invasive During the process, the patient watches a small animation while a computer-guided low-energy laser passes through the clear cornea of the eye and is absorbed by the dark brown pigment. The laser disrupts the layer of brown pigment that covers the blue iris underneath. This disruption initiates the natural tissue-removal process to begin.

The patient can resume normal activities, including driving, shortly after treatment. Within two to four weeks, the dark pigment should begin to disappear, leaving behind light blue eyes.

This procedure is not available yet in the United States. Clinical trials are currently being held in Costa Rica and Mexico, and further trials will be conducted in Costa Rica and the Philippines.

The American Association of Ophthalmologists has expressed reservations regarding the long-term safety of the laser treatment. Though no adverse effects have been reported in patients after one year, there is concerned that glaucoma could occur in patients ten years or more after treatment. More long-term trials will be needed to determine the results of the procedure over time.

The laser treatment to change eye color would cost upwards of $5000 if available in the United States. For patients wishing to try a new eye color, tinted, prescription contact lenses are still the safest and least expensive solution.
