It may be arguable, but the 4th of July in New Jersey is probably about as American as it gets. Consider the state itself: beautiful vistas, woods, and streams juxtaposed with factories and businesses, casinos and nightlife on the waterfront and farms and quaint townships farther inland. It’s quintessentially American all right, with the brash and the beautiful all mixed together.

And that’s just one reason you’ll want to make sure you see some of the 4th of July events in New Jersey. So we’ve picked out a few – some big and loud and some more reserved – for you to choose from and enjoy.

Oceanfest at Long Branch

Here’s how it’s billed on the website: “It’s the biggest seasonal event on the Jersey Shore – in fact, it’s the biggest Independence Day celebration anywhere in New Jersey, and it happens every July 4th right here in Long Branch.” Since 1990, it has been an all-out effort to celebrate Independence Day, drawing hundreds of thousands of people from all over the Mid-Atlantic region.

It’s an all-day, family-friendly festival that “brings together the most memorable sounds and sensations of the summer season.” And it is capped off with “the most memorable fireworks you’ll see anywhere along the Jersey coast.”

Freedom and Fireworks, Jersey City

This year will mark the Fourth Annual Jersey City Freedom & Fireworks Festival in Liberty State Park. You can enjoy live music, entertainment for the kids, lots of food and drink, and a breathtaking fireworks display on July Fourth. The fireworks display will be by Grucci and set against the stunning backdrop of the New York City skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island.

Liberty State Park is located at 200 Morris Pesin Drive in Jersey City.

Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza, Seaside Heights

A spectacular fireworks display on the oceanfront, this one takes place on Tuesday, July 4, at 9:30 pm. Sponsored by Coca-Cola, the fireworks can be seen from anywhere on the Seaside Heights Boardwalk.

Little Falls 4th of July Street Fair

At Main Street and Stevens Avenue in Little Falls, this street fair will include live music and entertainment with fun family attractions. It’s all here: kiddie rides and games, a climbing wall, face painting, craft exhibitors, artists, and more. Festival foods will include shish kabobs, kettle corn, pulled pork, sausage sandwiches, ice cream, funnel cakes, and Italian ices. It’ll be loads of fun and food for the entire family.

SummerMusic: Jersey Sound with Fireworks Celebration

The Essex County Free Summer Music Concert Series, held at Brookdale Park, features a diverse lineup of performers and a range of music. Just bring along a blanket to relax on and enjoy the cool evening breeze. You can even dance to the hot sounds of summer if you choose. A fireworks show and celebration will follow the concert at 9:15 pm.
